The National D-Day Memorial: Clearly a Worthwhile Journey
by Sally Matheny A Foggy Beginning The fog on June 5 of our family vacation, reminded me of another foggy June 5. Our trip to Virginia, in the summer of 2015, began on a sunny note, but quickly immersed under thick clouds and drizzling rain. The dreary weather lounged with us almost every day in the Shenandoah Valley. The morning of our departure, June 5, the dense fog finally rose just enough to scout over the trees. The rain ceased. Wanting to squeeze in one more activity before checking out, we raced to the chairlift located on the property. By the time we reached the summit, the weather changed. A…

Review of Fragile World: A Film by Sandy Boikian
by Sally Matheny An intriguing movie released in 2015. While fictional in story, Fragile World may shatter a few misconceptions about those who suffer with the realities of mental illness. It certainly refreshed my perspective. The award winning, inspirational film has earned the highest rating of five Doves. This nonrated family feature is free of foul language, sexual content, and violence but the storyline is best suited for ages twelve and up. Summer Fun for Family: Pickin’ and Grinnin’ at Earl Scruggs Center
If you've ever watched the television series, The Beverly Hillbillies, you may remember musicians Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt. Occasionally, they sauntered through the Clampetts’ mansion door pickin’ and grinnin’. If you missed their appearances, you didn’t miss out on their music. Scruggs and Flat performed the theme song for the show. You can share the history of the toe-tapping, bluegrass music with your children by visiting a wonderful museum in western North Carolina. The Earl Scruggs Center, which opened in January 2014, is located on Lafayette Street in Shelby, North Carolina.
