The Authors

Michelle Medlock Adams is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author of more than 100 books. Eva Marie Everson is also a multiple award-winning author and speaker.

She is one of the original five Word Weavers members, which began in 1997. She served first as the original president (2000-2007) and is now CEO of Word Weavers International, Inc., which serves writers primarily as a national and international group of critique and educational chapters. 

Everson also serves as director of Florida Christian Writers Conferenceand the contest director for the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. She also enjoys working as a private writing coach and editor.

The Illustrations

Anna Jones does a beautiful job with the illustrations in OUR GOD IS BIGGER THAN THAT! The colors are bright and inviting but Jones presents them with a soft touch. She does an excellent job conveying each animal’s fear without making it scary or uncomfortable for little readers. Jones adds cute details that are sure to please little ones–like a flower hat and a mushroom nightlight. If you look closely, you’ll even see little mice sitting happily on the back of a relaxing cat at the end.

The Book: OUR GOD IS BIGGER THAN THAT!

Published by End Game Press in 2022, this picture book packs a lot of power in 32 pages. The story’s setting is a farm and proceeds from sunrise to sunset. Along the way, we learn about the fears of different farm animals. The kitten is afraid of the dog. The mouse is afraid of the cat. The baby chick is afraid of the possibility of a fox. The calf is afraid of getting bit by a fly. The dog is afraid of getting hurt by a horse. Each animal expresses their fears to a parent or parental figure (farmer). Each fear is lovingly acknowledged with encouragement and sound advice. But, also each young one is reminded about how big our God is.

“God’s greater than your greatest fear.

He knows just where you’re at.

No matter what you face in life—

Our God is bigger than that!

I’ll not spoil the ending, but the last one to express fear is the farmer’s daughter. It is a fear with which many little ones can relate, and she’s encouraged as well.

Additional Note

Michelle Medlock Adams shares a touching personal note at the beginning of this book and how her friend and co-author Eva Marie Everson encouraged her during some fearful moments in her life. Everson’s encouragement and reminder that our God is bigger than any of our fears is what inspired them to write this book.

Both authors share a note with parents at the end of the book. They include talking points about David and Goliath; how we can’t let even healthy fears stop us from living our lives; where to turn to for help when we’re afraid; and how to face our fears. Scripture is not included within the story’s text, but references are given in the note to parents at the end.

Recommendation

I highly recommend this book for ages two – six years old. I read it to my 23-month-old granddaughter and she stayed engaged throughout the book. She even joined in saying part of the refrain: “God is bigger!”

This book needs to be on every child’s nightstand.
