Once Upon a Farm by Rory Feek -Book Review & Giveaway
by Sally Matheny
Once Upon a Farm is Rory Feek’s, second book. The Grammy-Award winning artist’s first book, This Life I Live, told of the exceptional love story he and his late wife, Joey shared. Read this review of how these two books compare.
I thought based on the book cover of Once Upon a Farm, there would be lots of stories about raising his four-year-old daughter, Indiana. Out of the fifty-six random stories, only a small handful are about sweet Indy. But they are precious!
As in his first book, Rory maintains the same style of writing with his humble and grateful attitude and raw sincerity.
But this book differs from the first one in several ways:
1. It includes photos! There are eight full pages of color photos of Rory and Joey, the two older daughters Hopie and Heidi, little baby Indy, and the farmhouse where Rory and Indy live.
2. Whereas This Life I Live told a series of stories from beginning to end, Once Upon a Farm is more of a collection of random stories written about various family members at different times in their lives. There doesn’t appear to be a chronological order to the stories.
3. There are a few controversial topics in the Farm book. You can read about one of those on Rory’s blog here.
Rory’s Sorrow
Rory shares his sorrow for not being there for his two older daughters as much as he should’ve been when they were younger. He is there for them now with his unconditional love just as a father should be.
However, some readers will question if Feek is overcompensating in some areas and compromising his stand on Biblical truths.
Personally, I loved the stories best in the first book, This Life I Live, and I liked the photos in Once Upon a Farm.

I want to read it.
I enjoyed reading “This Live I Live”. Rory has a comfortable style of writing, yet interesting, drawing in the reader. I don’t agree with him on everything, but do have compassion for him as a single father desiring to do his best. His Journey as a single father raising Indy is delightful to follow. I look forward to reading “Once Upon a Farm”.
