ON BENDED KNEE {Book Review & Giveaway}

What a way to begin a new year–ON BENDED KNEE. If you’re looking for a new Bible study, then consider this book review of Crickett Keeth’s book, ON BENDED KNEE. Plus there’s a giveaway!

How’s your prayer life?

Dull? One-sided? Almost non-existent?

At some point, we’ve all been there. We know something is lacking, but we aren’t sure what it is or how to address it.

Perhaps ON BENDED KNEE: Praying Like Prophets, Warriors, and Kings will be of help.

About the Author of ON BENDED KNEE

Crickett Keeth graduated from  Dallas Theological Seminary and served with Campus Crusade for Christ for ten years. Also, she is a writer, speaker, teacher of women’s Bible studies, and serves as the Women’s Ministry Director at First Evangelical Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

A few years ago, I had the honor of meeting Crickett at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference (BRMCWC). Her conversations reflected a sincere joy and faith in Jesus Christ. Those traits, as well as a humble spirit, are reflected in her writing.

In the introduction, Crickett writes:

“I knew my prayer life wasn’t what it needed to be (and I’m still growing in this area). That’s why I wrote this Bible study—to learn how to go deeper in prayer by studying the prayers of men and women in the Bible.

I want my prayers to go deeper than just asking God to give me something or ‘bless me.’ I want to pray like these men and women we’re going to be studying—prophets who were committed to God’s truth and pointed others to Him; warriors who fought not only in physical battles with armor and swords, but prayer warriors who fought for God’s will to be done; and kings who faced overwhelming situations they knew they couldn’t handle on their own.”

ON BENDED KNEE – General Overview

To begin with, over ten endorsements from people, including Carol Kent, Ellie Holcomb, and Lucinda Secrest McDowell grace the first page.

Suggestions for how to use the eight-week Bible study precede the author’s sweet introduction.

Following that, are eight chapters. Each chapter includes five days of Bible study for the week. Readers study the prayers of Jesus, Paul, Job, Hannah, David, Asa, Jehoshaphat, and Nehemiah.

Also Included

At the end of the book, are the scripture verses containing the prayers being studied, plus references to additional prayers in the Bible.

Also included, is a helpful Leader’s Guide for those who wish to work through the Bible study in a small group.

The Details of Each Week’s Bible Study

The details of each week’s Bible study follow the same format. The study begins with a short introductory insight and a short prayer followed by scripture reading and discussion questions.

The questions are grouped under four headings: Looking to God’s Word, Looking Upward, Looking Deeper, and Looking Reflectively.

Lastly, each day’s study ends with a quote from a well-known writer. Charles Spurgeon, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, Mary DeMuth, and Warren Wiersbe are a sampling.

The Recommendation

The inside of this book is as beautiful as the cover. While Crickett illustrates points with her interesting life experiences, she does not assert her views on the reader. She gently guides us to the scripture, asks questions for us to ponder, and points us to pray and seek God’s wisdom.

Therefore, I recommend this book to women desiring to learn from the Bible and who long for a deeper prayer life.

This book sounds like a book that would be very helpful in further developing my prayer life! Sometimes I feel that my prayer life is just going down my daily lists of folks that I pray for regularly & feeling like it’s become rote! I desire a dynamic worshipful prayer life- not lists of folks I pray for regularly! Any suggestions?

I’m wondering if it might be a good study for the Wednesday night gals that come to study while their kiddos are in AWANA! ( Our group also has several women who are not “AWANA moms! )
Thanks for adding my name in the drawing, Sally!

    Hi, Betsy,

Oh, I think this would be a wonderful Bible study book for your “Wednesday night gals” 🙂 and for you as well.

I recently attended a Women’s Conference focused on prayer. Several wonderful points were made. But the one that stuck with me personally was the one about doing whatever we have to do to shut out distractions while praying. For me, that means taking my thoughts captive when my mind begins to flit from one thing to another during prayer time. Just as with anything else, it requires me to humble myself and ask for God’s help. I pray for a focused mind and a teachable spirit.

I’m sure that would help with any issue you’re having with your prayer life, as well. Also, consider beginning a prayer time by singing a song of praise or by reading a Psalm of thanksgiving from the Bible. I’ll be praying for you specifically in this area, Betsy. Pray for me as well and let’s keep encouraging one another. 🙂

(And, I’ve put your name in the drawing for the book!)
