Farm to Film – Children’s Book Review {& Giveaway}

Who’s searching for a child’s gift? Check out this review of the children’s book, FARM TO FILM, and see if it’s the gift with which you can check off your list. Plus, there’s a giveaway with this review!

FARM TO FILM: An Alphabetical Story Told Through the Eyes of an Old Lens is a hardcover picture book. I couldn’t find a target age range listed for the book. Children ages eight and under will enjoy the illustrations. However, the format of the text and the vocabulary may require the assistance of an older reader.

The Author and Illustrator of FARM TO FILM

This is Hannah Miles Pierrou’s first time writing and publishing a book. However, she’s been an artist for years. As a lifestyle photographer and designer, Pierrou loves “sharing the concept of capturing the beautiful creation found in everyday experiences.”

She and her husband are raising a family in Colorado along with chickens, dogs, and kittens.

They built a treehouse cabin on their property which explains the name of her publishing under the name Treehouse Storyteller.

The Contents of FARM TO FILM

The story is narrated by someone who goes to visit Pop and Gram’s farm. Readers don’t learn anything about the narrator, but one can assume it’s a girl since the front cover illustration shows a braided ponytail and what appears to be a floral print dress.

The story unfolds as she takes photos using her Pop’s old camera, which she refers to as a “big eyeball.”

As she walks around the farm she talks about the objects and the animals she sees and with which letter of the alphabet they begin.

The story begins with the alpacas, progresses through the farm with a rain storm on the horizon, and ends inside the farmhouse with the narrator zipping up Pop’s camera inside its leather case.

Most of the text is free verse, but occasionally there’s some rhyming text added.

The illustrations are beautiful and unique. Geometric shapes are incorporated into the bright, watercolor sketches. My favorites were the basket of eggs and the glass jar of cotton.

Each letter of the alphabet receives a full color, two-page spread!

What’s Different About This ABC Book

Unlike most 32-page picture books, FARM TO FILM contains fifty-four colorful pages!

Also, this alphabetical book is different than most in that it presents the lower case letter in the text first. For example: “d is for Deer” and “j is for Jar”.

The font size continually changes throughout the book. Random words are printed in all caps, while some words at the beginning of sentences are not capitalized.  This is why I mentioned the book may require an older reader. Maybe the author wanted to depict how the child narrator might write, or perhaps she simply wanted to allow the words to flow in a playful manner. Sort of like skipping around the farm!

My Thoughts

The FARM TO FILM book is a beautifully illustrated book about a timeless and wholesome topic—farm life. Children will enjoy studying Pierrou’s illustrations as they hear about life on Gram and Pop’s farm.

It’s hardcover design and high-quality pages will make it a long-lasting keepsake.

What an interesting and intriguing book! I grew up spending lots of time on my grandparents’ farm, and then my husband and I raised two kids and many animals on a small farm before we left for him to go to seminary. This book sounds like it would mirror some of our experiences, bringing back lots of memories! Thanks for reviewing it, Sally.
