LOVE IS KIND by Laura Sassi- Book Review & Giveaway
by Sally Matheny
This week I’m sharing my review of the Christian children’s picture book, LOVE IS KIND and there’s a giveaway!
The Review
In LOVE IS KIND, by Laura Sassi, there’s a precious little owl in pursuit of the perfect gift for Grammy’s birthday—a heart-shaped box of chocolates. But Little Owl’s trip to Chipmunk’s Chocolate Shoppe is anything but smooth.
This beautiful picture book will delight children ages four-to-eight years old. French artist, Lison Chaperon, gives attention to every detail in the adorable illustrations. I love how she weaves verses from the “love chapter,” 1 Corinthians 13, into her illustrations of a stream, over a hearth, in the petals of a sunflower, and other special places.
Someone has already been pouring the meaning of love into Little Owl. We see that by his responses to the various struggles he faces on the way to the Chocolate Shoppe.
I am glad the author includes realistic, initial reactions of Little Owl such as disappointment, temptation, envy, anger, and sadness. Because, children, as well as adults, often experience these feelings when disappointments come our way.
In addition, this book offers delightful and gentle reminders of the choices we have in responding to challenging situations.
Little Owl’s gift doesn’t materialize as he had planned.
But like all good grandmas, Grammy reminds Little Owl he’s chosen the best gift of all.

Love Is Kind By Laura Sassi / ZondervanLove Is Kind is a heartwarming story about Little Owl who hopes to buy his grammy a heart-shaped box of chocolates for her birthday. On his quest for the chocolates, he’s thwarted at every turn, but ends up discovering the real meaning of love as described in 1 Corinthians 13. Told in simple prose, this heartfelt and humorous picture book is a sweet reminder that real love isn’t found in a box – even one filled with chocolates. This story takes a charming and gentle approach to teaching kids the true meaning of love, while celebrating the bonds that kids have with their grandparents, and the many forms that love and happiness can take. |
