G IS FOR GROUNDHOG: Book Review & Giveaway
by Sally Matheny
Groundhog Day will be here in the blink of a sunbeam. Have you got your books on groundhogs ready for the little ones? Consider the book I’m reviewing, G is for Groundhog, written by Kristi M. Butler. Remember to check about the giveaway at the end!
Educational
This book is written in an abc format and most of the text is rhyming. It is suggested for readers who are five- to nine-years-old.
Educational information is provided about groundhogs. Readers learn about the groundhog’s body features, about their habitat, and how they survive.
Entertaining
While the majority of the book shares interesting facts about groundhogs, there is also mention of Groundhog Day on the pages, “F is for February” and “S is for Spring,” and “W is for Winter.”
S is for Spring.
We really want an early one.
So we hope for no shadow
and a cloud to hide the sun.
Children will enjoy the colorful illustrations in this book. Samantha Bell illustrates cute little groundhogs in a variety of settings.
Spiritual Content
I believe this book could easily be used in a variety of educational settings since the spiritual content is limited to one scripture verse, Psalm 104:24, printed on the last page. Guardian Angel Publishing published this book.
Giveaway!
Did you know the popular, although scientifically unfounded, tradition is observed in America and Canada on February 2?
Nonetheless, Groundhog Day is a great time to teach children about groundhogs!

What a treat to have the author of G is for Groundhog pop in for a visit!
And yes! I love your use of the word “voracious.” 🙂 In the winter, my appetite seems like that as well! 🙂

This looks like a great book! I hope we have a bit more winter, we are loving our outdoor sports this winter!
Sally Matheny
Hi, Kari Lynn. What kind of outdoor sports does your family enjoy?
I do enjoy snow but we only get it here about once or twice a year. So when it’s gone, I’m ready for spring!
Kristi M. Butler
Kari Lynn, I’m hoping for at least one snow before spring too!
Kristi M. Butler
Yes, Kari Lynn! Bring on some snow before spring!

Yvonne Billian
We had a groundhog living in our backyard last spring/summer. One day when I went to feed our rabbit I wasn’t really paying attention and when I happened to look in front of me there was the groundhog! He or she was certainly eating very well 🙂
Sally Matheny
Yvonne, that’s funny! Perhaps the groundhog and your rabbit were friends. Hey, that sounds like an idea for a picture book. We’ll have to tell Kristi! 🙂
Sally Matheny
Congratulations to Yvonne B. from Maine! Your name was drawn as the winner of the G IS FOR GROUNDHOG book. I’ll be in touch with you to find out where I should mail the book. We’ll need to hurry so you can read it to the kiddos before the big day!
