DREAM BIG, MY PRECIOUS ONE {Book Review & Giveaway}
Cradled on our bookshelves are several children’s books written by Jill Roman Lord. So, it was a delight to receive one of her latest books, DREAM BIG, MY PRECIOUS ONE to review here on the blog. Plus, we have an autographed copy as a giveaway. Yay! We all love free books—especially those which are beautifully written and illustrated.
The Author
Jill Roman Lord is an award-winning author of numerous Christian children’s books including THE SILENT NOISY NIGHT; IF JESUS WALKED BESIDE ME; and GOD MADE YOU JUST RIGHT. Plus, not long ago, I posted a review of YOU’RE MORE THAN A SPROUT.
In addition to writing, Lord works as a nurse anesthetist. She and her husband live in my home state of North Carolina. They have three grown children.
Content of DREAM BIG, MY PRECIOUS ONE
Published by Worthy Kids, this hardcover, rhyming picture book is written with a Christian worldview mentioning God in several places and ending with a scripture at the end.
The story begins with a mother and a little boy sitting on a porch swing looking out over the ocean. As they swing, she wonders out loud what his future interests will be.
Imaginings of possible hobbies, sports, skills, and jobs fill the first half of the book.
The second half of the book offers gentle reminders that nothing will “just happen overnight.” The mom tells him it will take hard work and training. There will be times of struggle.
“You may fall short, but that’s okay.
Then try again, a different way.
Keep trusting God, don’t go astray.
Dream big, my precious one.”
Reminding him to trust God through it all, the mom also encourages her son to notice the ways his dreams may be used to help others.
In the end, Mom and the little boy are still sitting on the porch swing watching the moon rise above the ocean. The reoccurring phrase wraps the story up nicely,
“Dream big, my precious one.”
Illustrations of DREAM BIG, MY PRECIOUS ONE
Thirty-two pages are filled with delightful and colorful illustrations. Even though the mom is wondering what her son will be when he grows up, the illustrations depict many different boys and girls. I like that all of the people in the book are of various skin colors and ethnic groups. The mom and son also have different color skin tones.
Children will enjoy the little details in the illustrations such as kids roasting marshmallows or selling lemonade.
The artist, Brittany E. Lakin, does a beautiful job pulling readers into the story.
Recommendation
DREAM BIG, MY PRECIOUS ONE is a happy, uplifting book. I highly recommend it.
Because the “mom” in this book is never mentioned by that name, she could easily be a big sister, a young-looking grandmother, friend, or guardian. That makes this book a great gift from any influencer in a child’s life.
It is a wonderful book for preschoolers – age eight. Older children may enjoy reading the encouraging words as well.
